Mary V. Gonzales, a 55 year resident of the South Bay, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2007 in Torrance. Born in Taos, New Mexico, Mary was 86 when she went to her Glory. Mary was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Parish Church. Mary's greatest passion was the care and love for her children, grandchildren, family and friends. She was loved by everyone who knew her. In her last days, she was dubbed "Queen Mary" by patients and medical staff who met her. Joan Elizabeth Wheeland passed away February 17, 2007. Joan was born November 18, 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio, to Russell and Nettie Shoemaker. She is survived by Hoyt Wheeland of Taos, NM, husband of 44 years, daughter Stacey Elizabeth Hammond of Taos, brother Russell Gerald Shoemaker of Albany, OH, grandchildren Jillian Summer Elizabeth Huether of Taos, Cody Alan Stephen Hammond of Taos, Vanessa Nicole Wheeland of Fort Knox, KY, and Julian Stuart Wheeland of Kiowa, OK, and her cat, Licorice. She is predeceased by sons Mark David Wheeland and Hoyt Stephen Wheeland, by her father and mother, and by a brother, Paul Shoemaker. In addition to being a stayathome Mom, Joan’s professional career included being Manager of Employment Services for the American Chemical Society. A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Taos at a date and time to be determined. Nancy Rutherford, 83, Guerneville, CA, Nancy Helen Synold Rutherford passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 6, 2007. Her daughter Laura was with her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Isabel Haefner Synold; six brothers and sisters; and her husband Wayne Rutherford Sr. She is survived by her children, Sue Rutherford, Laura Lee Bofferding, Wayne Jr. of Taos; granddaughterofthe heart, Nova Sayers; grandson Matthew Rutherford of Oakland, CA; and great grandson Alexander Jones. Nancy was born July 12, 1923 in Milwaukee, WI; graduated from nursing school in 1945, "ran off" to Alaska in 1947 to work for Alaska Airlines as a stewardess, where she met and married
Wayne Rutherford Sr. During their marriage they lived in Alaska, Israel, Cyprus, Florida, Danville, CA, Tripoli, Libya, Cairo, Egpyt, Santa Fe, NM; and then Guerneville from 1978. Nancy worked as a hospital and school nurse 1957 1989. She was a lover of nature in all its forms, and was a lifelong student. Nancy volunteered at visitor centers, libraries, food banks, nature preserves, and wildlife rescue centers. She was an avid gardener, an intrepid traveler who especially loved northern New Mexico, read widely, and was fascinated with whatever might be around the next corner. Nancy was absolutely filled up and overflowing with a zest for life, and took great joy in going off on whatever new adventure was at hand. She was a loving and devoted mother, a loyal friend, and a caring and professional nurse. She was a person of her word, a conscientious and active citizen, generous in spirit, stood up for what she believed in, and was committed to helping those less fortunate than her. She taught her children to do the same. Nancy treasured her family and was surrounded by a circle of loving friends. The world is a better place and we are better people because of her. We all miss her. Services will be held March 3, 2007 in Santa Rosa, CA and at Wright's Beach. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to any public library or any senior citizen center.
Carlos “Charlie” Lucero, 81, of Ranchos de Taos passed away on February 7, 2007. He is preceded in death by his wife, Adelina Lucero, infant son, C.G. Lucero, parents, David & Estella Lucero, sisters, Edna Vargas and Mary Lucero. He is survived by his daughters, Martha Ortiz (Celso), Beatrice Lucero, Cecilia Lucero, Rose Quintana (Orlando) and Carmen Ortiz (Leonardo). Kirby Dale Blair passed away on February 6, 2007. He was born July 4, 1933 in Waco, Texas. He was a Taos resident for over 30 years. Known by his friends as Dale, he graduated Southern Methodist University with a Masters degree in Creative Writing and History and began his journalistic career with the Dallas Times Herald as a film and stage critic. He was well known in the Dallas Theater community, where he had several plays produced, and later had a play produced Off Broadway. He was also known for his creative writing workshops held at Baylor University and Baylor Theater. He went on to research and wrote a historical novel “Quanah, The Coiled Snake.” He was a recipient of three Helene Wurlitzer Foundation grants for writing. He is survived by nieces, Carolyn Blair Morrison of Kettle Falls, WA, Nancy Blair Benson of Saucon Valley, PA and Elizabeth Blair Christy of Granbury, TX, two great nieces, a great nephew and two great great nieces and his community of many loving friends in Taos. Lupe Esquibel Mondragón, formerly of Llano Quemado passed away February 3, 2007 in West Valley City, Utah. She was born April 26, 1923 in Ranchos De Taos to Andrés and Albinita Medina Esquibel. She married
Carlos Emelio Mondragón on October 5, 1938. She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Berghita Martinez, brother Clodoveo Herrera, sonsinlaw Gilbert Vásquez and José Ramírez. She is survived by her husband, Carlos; children Donna (Paul) Chávez, Cecilia Vásquez Ramirez, Carlos (Ann) Mondragón Jr., Billy (Alicia) Mondragón, Andy (Lola) Mondragón, Keith (Roberta) Mondragón and Michelle Rasmussen all of Utah; 29 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren and many relatives from Llano Quemado & Ranchos De Taos. Pauline García Larson, 63, of Taos passed away on February 5, 2007. She is preceded in death by her father, Samuel García, son, Francis García, brothers, Fernando Robert and Sam P. García. May W. Maestas, 82, died Friday February 9, 2007. Born November 4th, 1924 in Jaroso, CO, she was raised and lived in Taos, NM. Throughout her life, she dedicated her time to helping others through many local civic and faithbased organizations. She gave to her parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe, through the use of her time. She was a dedicated lector, a member of the Altar Society, The Catholic Daughters, and was active in the Cursillo movement. She was also a member of Las Taoseñas. She was a charter member, National Department Secretary, and State President of the local Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She carried her sense of patriotism to the community for many years as presiding judge at the election polls. When not giving of her time, she shared her love of people and was a tireless worker. Through the years her smiling face could be seen helping people at several local stores where she either worked or managed including J.C. Penney, Del Sol Weaving, Kachina Gifts, Aaronson Brothers, and Anthony's. In the interval between Aaronson Brothers and Anthony's, she worked as a teacher's aide in the Enos García Middle School reading lab and she felt that perhaps being a teacher was a missed calling. Following the demise of the Anthony's chain, she landed on her feet, as always, in the position that would define the remainder of her life. For nearly twenty years she worked at the Ancianos Senior Center in Taos where she shared her love of life with other seniors. She continued to visit as a participant and volunteer until her death. She is survived by her four children and their families; Joseph Robert & Bernadette Maestas of Taos, their children Pamela, Robert Christopher & April, and Jamie; Joseph Paul & JoAnn Maestas of Albuquerque, and their children Matthew & Debbie, Charles & Maureen, Gregory, Gail, and Reuben; Cecilia Consuelo & Margarito Lucero of Taos, and their children, Philip & Heather Graybull, and Maya Graybull; Teresa May & Abel Montoya of Taos, and their children, Mark & Carla, and Stephen. She is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren and an entire community of close friends. Rosaries were recited by the Catholic Daughters on Saturday, February 10th, 2007, at Rivera Hanlon Funeral Home and Sunday, February 11th, 2007, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. The funeral mass was held at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 12th, 2007, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Taos. She was laid to rest at 2:30 PM at the National cemetery in Santa Fe. Virgil BartzVirgil Bartz, 88, of Taos and formerly of Manhattan Beach, CA, passed away on May 20, 2007. He was surrounded by loving family and the devoted staff at Plaza de Retiro Medical Center. Virgil served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Saratoga during WWII. He was employed by Rockwell Intl. and, he was an avid sports enthusiast. He is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Catherine Moore. Virgil will be remembered as a kind and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. His family feels honored to have been a part of his life and to have been present at his passing. Frances Pinder Poole, 88, of Taos, passed away on May 5, 2007, after a long illness. Frances was born on October 31, 1918 to Thomas Pinder and Ida Molock. After the early deaths of her parents, Frances was raised by her loving aunt and uncle Frances and Aldie Cannon, of Philadelphia, PA. She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 64 years, James Russell Poole, and her beloved daughter Frances Poole Lee. She is survived by her daughter JoAnn Poole Mills and grandson Seamus Mills, of Taos; sisters Josephine Price of Pennsylvania, and Vivian Jackson, of Maryland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Frances had a distinguished career as a mathematician and computer analyst for the U.S. government. Hugh A. HolbornHugh A. Holborn, listed as one of the largest environmental contractors in the United States, passed away surrounded by loving family and friends on May 9, 2007, after a valiant five year battle with cancer. Hugh was well known for his integrity, strength of character, determination and fierce devotion to his family. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. Hugh was born in Hamlet, North Carolina on September 24, 1923 to Ruth and Lewis Holborn. He is predeceased by his brother, Lewis Holborn. Hugh proudly served his country in the Unites States Navy during WWII. He graduated from Landon High School in Jacksonville, Florida; and while still in high school worked diligently for Gibbs Shipyard. He graduated from Georgia Tech and then went on to complete further education at the University of Florida. He was a loyal member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity serving as President while attending Georgia Tech. Mr. Holborn joined the mechanical firm of Henley and Beckwith Company rising to Chief Engineer of Mechanical Construction. Upon leaving Henley and Beckwith, he joined Continental Consolidated Corporation where he participated in the construction of nuclear power facilities at Hanford Nuclear Power Plant near Richland, Washington. He also participated in the construction of the NORAD Defense Center at Cheyenne Mountain, Wyoming. He started his own construction firm in Jacksonville, Florida, Indian River Industrial Contractors in 1964; this firm was involved in power generation facilities and water and wastewater construction. The firm worked throughout the southeast and especially in Duval and St Johns counties. His company was recently sold to W.W. Gay Corporation, his friend of many years, Bill Gay. His company was listed in “Engineering News Records Top Two Hundred” as the 134th largest environmental contractor in the United States. He devoted three years, during the 1970s, to serving as Chairman of the Board, for Jacksonville Country Day School. He was a staunch supporter of the American Cancer Society and to his church, All Saints Episcopal, on Hendricks Avenue. Mr. Holborn was a member of the Deerwood, Ponte Vedra and San Jose Country Clubs. He is survived by his dearly beloved wife of 52 years, Gwen, their two children, Deborah Holborn Shaw (son-in-law John R Shaw Jr.) and Hugh A. H. “Bill” Pitman Jr. (Sylvia Shaw), Mr. and Mrs. Howard J Shaw (Bozena), Marcia Shaw McTier, and extended nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 12:00pm Thursday May 17, 2007, at All Saints Episcopal Church with The Reverend Thomas W. Deppe and The Reverend George D. Young Jr. officiating. Lesvia Rodríguez, 60, of El Prado passed away on May 12, 2007. She was an Educational Assistant for special needs students with the Taos Municipal Schools. She was a longtime member of the Guadalupanas and a Eucharist Minister for Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Lesvia gave the gift of life by being an organ donor. She is preceded in death by her son, Valentín Rodríguez III, parents, Jesus & Elena Castillon, brothers, Juan and Jesús Castillón, brothers in law, Oscar Rodríguez and Dan García. She is survived by her husband, Valentin, children, Martin Rodríguez (Jeanette), June Chavez, Patricia Gonzales (Enrique) and Sonya Rodríguez (Juan Carlos). She is also survived by brother, Oscar Castillon (Rosie), sisters, Helen “Lala” Garcia and Belia Rodríguez, grandchildren, Enrique and Alejandro Gonzales, Isaac and Larissa Chavez, sister in law, Carmella Castillón, many close nephews, nieces and other relatives. Rosary will be recited on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 7 PM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
